Why do you lead?
No really, stop for a minute and consider this question: Why do you lead?
Do you know how to answer that question? Leadership is not for the faint of heart. It can be daunting. It can be exhausting. We can wake up some days wondering why we chose to lead in the first place.
It is in those moments that we need clarity on how we answer the question, “why do you lead?”.
For me, this Proverb sums it up.
“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them…
Purpose > Process.
That is something we need to constantly remind ourselves. We are often tempted to focus on the process, which is needed, but the purpose can get lost as we shift our focus to work out the process.
Why is this important for an organizational leader?
At the end of the day, we are judged on our results. We are not judged on having an awesome process. If the process does not deliver on the purpose, then we don’t win. We need to ensure the process we build enables us to activate and deliver on the purpose.
Have you ever struggled to get your team to respond to the idea you shared?
Have you ever made a suggestion to your team and, the next thing you know, your team is acting on your suggestion?
Have you ever shared your idea only to find out weeks later there were better ideas, but your team did not feel comfortable sharing them with you during the discussion? They indicated your idea was awesome but did not have the courage to share alternative thoughts.
My guess, if you are like me, is you have experienced this at some point in your…
“I have some bad news. Your job is being eliminated.”
Those are the words spoken to me recently.
Elimination is such a strong word. It hurts.
I’ve never experienced this before. In fact, I’m grateful to have only experienced the opposite in my career. I know many of us have now experienced this for the first time due to extraordinary events and decisions made by others. It hurts. It’s confusing. It’s scary. It’s risky. It’s feels out of our control. It’s a lot of things.
I’ve travelled to the extremes of emotions so far but keep coming back to a…
What do you do when your plans go sideways? When chaos and clutter are prevalent and the fog rolls in?
We’ve all been there. Some of us are there now.
We’ve all had moments or seasons where chaos reigns and we struggle to maintain focus and forward momentum. Stress rises. Things break. We freak out. Blood pressure rises. Distraction settles in and we feel stuck.
I love what President Eisenhower said about plans and planning. He said, “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” …
“Time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin into the future”
-Fly Like An Eagle — The Steve Miller Band
There are a few things true about time. Time is relentless. Time keeps moving. Time never surrenders and time is undefeated. We can try to accelerate or decelerate time but it does not work. Time just keeps right on ticking. As the Steve Miller Band said so poetically, “Time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin into the future,” and that is how I often feel. Time is relentless.
A few years ago I started to define my One Word for the year. It…
Remember Mr. Miyagi?
Yes, the “wax on, wax off” sensei from the Karate Kid movies that taught Daniel LaRusso how to defend himself against the dreaded Cobra Kai’s.
He was often seen pruning and grooming Bonsai trees while Daniel was off waxing cars and staining fences. The cool thing is there’s a key leadership lesson we can learn from Mr. Miyagi related to the Bonsai trees he meticulously took care of.
Did you know that Bonsai trees are not naturally tiny trees? They actually have the DNA to grow to all different sizes, but are limited on purpose.
It’s that time of year again.
For most of us, we gladly say goodbye to 2020 and a very unique, colorful and creative way.
As we start 2021, it’s a time for us to refocus and cast a new vision. It’s a time for us to reset and start fresh. It’s a time for us to envision how we make 2021 our best year ever.
Most of our energy is focused on what we want to “DO” in 2021. We work on resolutions and set new goals. Most of these are tied to things we want to start doing, keep…
I often get asked what makes up a high-performing team and how do I build one.
As leaders, we all aspire to build a high-performing team. We want our peers and boss to perceive our team as high performing. We want our team to not be just an average team but be a team others aspire to join and a team that delivers extraordinary business results.
We know there is a lot at stake. We know team performance is an indicator of how well we are doing as leaders. We know it reflects engagement, efficiency, productivity and other aspects that…
Did you know you are contagious?
I’m not talking about the latest sickness making its way around your home or anything related to COVID-19. I’m talking about your energy and your attitude.
Contagious means there is something spreading from one person to another by direct or indirect contact. This is how viruses spread but also how our personal attitudes and energy spread.
We are all contagious.
In fact, there is research from the HeartMath Institute showing that when you have a feeling it can actually be felt by other people up to (10) feet around you. This means that every…
