Why do you lead?
No really, stop for a minute and consider this question: Why do you lead?
Do you know how to answer that question? Leadership is not for the faint of heart. It can be daunting. It can be exhausting. We can wake up some days wondering why we chose to lead in the first place.
It is in those moments that we need clarity on how we answer the question, “why do you lead?”.
For me, this Proverb sums it up.

Purpose > Process.
That is something we need to constantly remind ourselves. We are often tempted to focus on the process, which is needed, but the purpose can get lost as we shift our focus to work out the process.
Why is this important for an organizational leader?
At the end of the day, we are judged on our results. We are not judged on having an awesome process. If the process does not deliver on the purpose, then we don’t win. We need to ensure the process we build enables us to activate and deliver on the purpose.
Have you ever struggled to get your team to respond to the idea you shared?
Have you ever made a suggestion to your team and, the next thing you know, your team is acting on your suggestion?

Yes, the “wax on, wax off” sensei from the Karate Kid movies that taught Daniel LaRusso how to defend himself against the dreaded Cobra Kai’s.
