My Favorite Line From A Christmas Song
I love Christmas music. I don’t really like it before Thanksgiving, but I do like listening to it during the Christmas season. They are fun, nostalgic and help keep me in the proper perspective as to the real meaning of Christmas. Not to mention everyone out there has a Christmas album these days.
There are great songs out there. You have everything from “White Christmas” (the original from Bing Crosby) to “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” to Justin Bieber singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” to “Mele Kalikimaka” (which is Hawaiian for Merry Christmas). There are so many classics that it’s hard to pick a favorite, but for me there is one line in one song that stands out to me.
There is one line in an old Christmas song that really resonates with me and has become my favorite line in any Christmas song. It’s my favorite because of the implication of what it is saying about each of us in the context of what Christmas is really about.
The line comes from the song “O Holy Night” where it says,
“Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.”
The key words to me are the last five that says, “the soul felt its worth”. This is huge because it answers the question of how much we are worth to God that He would orchestrate the story of Christmas and the birth of Jesus.
When Jesus appeared our soul felt its worth. It was the most amazing act of love, humility and pursuit of us that God would invade the earth, become one of us and communicate to us that we are worth the life of his son Jesus.
If you ever struggle with your worth then gaze into what happened during that first Christmas. When Jesus appeared the worth of our soul was felt and God initiated the most amazing story of grace and love.
There is something about the Christmas season that makes our souls come alive. That something is the appearance of Jesus and the story of his life, death and resurrection and the implication on our lives as a result. We are worth Christmas to God
